ARTIST ENGAGED IN SOCIAL CHANGE

Syd Stewart is an artist and educator who engages her creative practice to transform the communities she serves.

As a performance poet, writer, filmmaker and founder/executive director of Better Youth, Inc.,  Syd mentors and teaches filmmaking, creative writing, and performance to teens and young adults in South LA. Her work with at-risk youth and underserved communities informs her catalytic work for social justice and change. Her public projects typically include multimedia artistic expression through collaborative engagement to create a cross-cultural, multigenerational and multidisciplinary work.

Stewart serves as a volunteer educator for the United Nations Foundation through GirlUP, a teen girls empowerment initiative. Stewart is presently working on a collection of video diariess that celebrates the connective adversity and courage of young girls and women called SUPERSHERO: The Journey of She”.

Supershero is a pilot program at Fremont High School in South, LA. Syd’s projects engage poetry, film, performance and community engagement

Forest Witcraft once said, “One hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, how big my house was, or what kind of car I drove. But the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child.”
