ARTIST ENGAGED IN SOCIAL CHANGE

Syd Stewart is an artist and educator who engages her creative practice to transform the communities she serves.

As a performance poet, writer, filmmaker and founder/executive director of Better Youth, Inc.,  Syd mentors and teaches filmmaking, creative writing, and performance to teens and young adults in South LA. Her work with at-risk youth and underserved communities informs her catalytic work for social justice and change. Her public projects typically include multimedia artistic expression through collaborative engagement to create a cross-cultural, multigenerational and multidisciplinary work.

Stewart serves as a volunteer educator for the United Nations Foundation through GirlUP, a teen girls empowerment initiative. Stewart is presently working on a collection of video diariess that celebrates the connective adversity and courage of young girls and women called “SUPERSHERO: The Journey of She”.

Supershero is a pilot program at Fremont High School in South, LA. Syd’s projects engage poetry, film, performance and community engagement
